Ingredients

  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour - Plus more for dusting
  • 1 packet instant yeast - 2 ¼ tsp
  • 1 cup milk - Warm (110°F)
  • 1 tablespoon sugar - For yeast
  • 1 ½ teaspoon salt - For dough
  • 1 egg - Room temperature
  • 3 tablespoon butter - Melted (for dough)
  • 6 tablespoon butter - Softened (for filling)
  • 4 cloves garlic - Minced
  • 3 tablespoon fresh herbs - Parsley, basil, oregano
  • 1 ½ cups mozzarella cheese - Shredded
  • ½ cup parmesan cheese - Grated

Instructions 

  • Mix flour, yeast, sugar, salt, warm milk, egg, and melted butter; knead for 7 minutes.
  • Let dough rise in a warm, greased bowl for 1 hour until doubled in size.
  • Roll dough into a rectangle; spread with garlic-herb butter and top with cheeses.
  • Roll into a log, cut lengthwise, twist the halves together, and place in a loaf pan.
  • Let rise for 30 minutes. Bake at 375°F for 30-35 minutes until golden brown.

Notes

For a distinct swirl, ensure you cut the rolled dough log lengthwise and twist with the cut sides facing up. Use fresh herbs for the best color and flavor.
